Not always in sport do you get a shot at redemption and successfully taking advantage of that opportunity is even rarer jili
England’s pack, and their front row in particular, will have had four years of sleepless nights about that early November evening in 2019 jili
In the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, England were decimated by South Africa’s power up front, as the brilliance of a scintillating semi-final win over New Zealand was quickly replaced by the humiliation of a 32-12 thumping jili
The Springboks, then as now, pride themselves on their physicality and brutality at the breakdown, the set-piece and in open play jili
Yet on a rainy night in Paris four years on, England’s pack fronted up, set the platform in a thrilling World Cup semi-final and earned their redemption arc jili
Yet it still wasn’t enough jili
This time, albeit by one point rather than 20, the result was the same – England’s players slumped on the turf in despair while their opponents revelled in victory jili
The Springbok celebrations were more muted this time, understandably so given there is one more crucial match against the All Blacks standing jili between them and their ultimate goal, but the English heartbreak was the same, even if the journey to get there was vastly different jili
In Yokohama, South Africa won a scarcely believable 11 scrums to England’s three, including six scrum penalties, as the English eight were splintered time and again jili
Dan Cole became the fall guy for that embarrassment – the tighthead prop, supposedly renowned for his scrummaging, forced to play 77 minutes after Kyle Sinckler’s early injury and being obliterated by the combination of Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Steven Kitshoff jili
The fact that Cole and Joe Marler, who came off the bench early in the second half that day, were selected by Steve Borthwick to start this revenge game precisely because of their scrum prowess will have surely given them a surge of confidence jili
And the fact they not only survived, but thrived, in the front row this time around will have been sheer vindication jili
Borthwick entrusted the duo to paint an early picture of scrum parity to referee Ben O’Keeffe and they delivered, providing the base that led to multiple first-half penalties from the trusty boot of Owen Farrell jili
Cole and Marler helped ensure scrum parity early on but that faded once the replacements came on (AFP via Getty Images)However, as the game wore on, Borthwick’s decision started to become prescient for the wrong reasons jili
As Sinckler and Ellis Genge came on as prop replacements, the Springboks own bomb squad from the bench – led by Ox Nche and Vincent Koch – started to dominate at scrum-time jili
Each engagement started to become eerily reminiscent of 2019 and it was eventually a scrum penalty on halfway that led to Handre Pollard’s decisive, game-winning three-pointer with two minutes to go jili
It felt almost unfair on England’s big men given that the pack, as a whole, had more than held their own in other facets jili
Of the 13 England forwards who played some part in that 2019 final, eight appeared in this last-four clash and stamped their mark all over a first half that was by far England’s best 40 minutes under Borthwick jili
Maro Itoje was a lineout fiend, stealing a Springboks throw-in on halfway and putting doubt in the head of Bongi Mbonambi, whose crooked throw in his own 22 gave Farrell his first penalty goal of the day jili
A new face from four years, George Martin, justified his surprise second-row selection ahead of incumbent Ollie Chessum on just his fourth Test start as he brilliantly marshalled England’s maul defence jili
If Boks lock Eben Etzejili beth is world rugby’s best maul disruptor, then he may have witnessed first-hand the emergence of a new challenger to that crown jili
Martin caused havoc as England improbably won three consecutive maul turnovers from attacking South African lineouts in the first half to frustrate their much-fancied opponents jili
Pollard ultimately kicked the winning penalty, from a scrum infringement (PA Wire)The celebrations from the likes of Itoje, Jamie George and Ben Earl as those penalties and free-kicks were earned by the pack showed just how important this part of the gameplan was jili
It began putting clear doubt in Springbok minds, as the worried tone from skipper Siya Kolisi when he discussed matter with referee O’Keeffe jili betrayed jili
The English tactic of throwing bodies in to contest every ruck relied on the diesel engines of the forwards and they delivered by dominating collisions and allowing the aerial bombardment strategy that followed to be effective jili
But ultimately, despite a gameplan executed as well as it possibly could have been, the gap in quality jili between the sides proved too much to overcome jili
South Africa adjusted, Pollard came on for Manie Libbok to dictate proceedings with his metronomic boot and English heartbreak ensued jili
There was no shame in a one-point defeat from a semi-final that was much closer than most expected and England’s pack should feel redeemed from the nightmare of 2019 jili
But that won’t make this semi-final hurt any less jili
Perhaps 2027 will give them an opportunity to avenge a new pain jili

Max Verstappen defied Lewis Hamilton to win a cat-and-mouse United States Grand Prix at a sizzling Circuit of the Americas in Austin - before Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified more than three hours later jili
Verstappen has been on easy street this season, but the triple world champion was made to fight for the 50th win of his career – becoming only the fifth driver to reach a half-century jili
Indeed, at one stage, Hamilton dared to dream of ending a losing streak which stands at 686 days and counting jili
Yet, as so often been the case this year, Verstappen’s speed in his all-conquering Red Bull machine came to the fore jili
He moved ahead of Lando Norris on lap 28 of 56 to all but seal the win jili
Hamilton might bemoan a questionable strategy decision which saw him lose 10 seconds to Verstappen in the opening round of pit stops jili
But in reality, he probably did not have the pace to stop the Dutchman from claiming his 15th win from the 18 rounds so far jili
The drama did not stop there though jili
Hamilton and Leclerc were later found to have breached the rules governing the floor of their cars and, in a shock end to the race weekend, were disqualified from the race jili
Logan Sargeant, therefore, earned his first F1 point jili
The seven-time world champion enjoyed a decent getaway at the start, but he was blocked by Norris under braking allowing Sainz to sneak through jili
Norris had seen off pole-sitter Leclerc with a lunge at the first bend to assume the top spot jili
As Norris set about building a lead – already two seconds clear of Leclerc at the end of the second lap – Hamilton set about passing both scarlet cars jili
First up was Sainz jili
Hamilton used the tow to latch on to the back of Ferrari on the 210mph drag to Turn 12, and, assisted by DRS, drew alongside Sainz before sliding underneath the Spaniard jili
On the following lap, Verstappen, who started in sixth after his pole lap in qualifying was chalked off for exceeding track limits, relegated Sainz to another place when he made his move at the same corner jili
Lando Norris took the lead at the start of the race (Getty)Hamilton has won six times across the Pond – with five of those victories here in Austin – and the 38-year-old required only two laps to swat Leclerc aside for second jili
Deeper on the brakes at Turn 12, Hamilton sailed round the outside of the Monegasque at the left-hander, with Norris now three seconds up the road jili
Behind, and Verstappen was not finding it as easy to make progress jili
He was stuck behind Leclerc for an additional five laps before finally making his move on the Monegasque jili
He trailed Norris by seven seconds, and Hamilton by four jili
In the Mercedes garage, Prince Harry cut a pensive figure as he gnawed at his fingernails jili
The Duke of Sussex has been something of a lucky charm for Hamilton jili
He was a guest of Mercedes when Hamilton secured his second title in the 2014 season decider in Abu Dhabi, leading the congratulations to his fellow Briton on the radio jili
Verstappen was the first in for new rubber at the end of lap 16 with Norris stopping the next time round jili
But Hamilton stayed out jili
Was Mercedes attempting a one-stopper? Hamilton did not seem convinced jili
Asked if he could complete another five laps on his current set of tyres, Hamilton replied: “I am not sure, man jili
It is pretty tough jili
”Hamilton then locked up before his race engineer Peter Bonnington was back on the intercom to inform Hamilton that Verstappen – who on new tyres had just lapped three seconds faster than the Briton – was now likely to gazump him when he eventually stopped jili

When Hamilton emerged from the pits, he had dropped to third, five seconds adrift of Verstappen jili

When the opening stops were completed, Norris led Verstappen by 2 jili

5 off the lead jili
By virtue of taking on another set of mediums, Verstappen had to stop again, but Norris and Hamilton – now both on the hards – could, if their rubber allowed, go all the way to the end jili
Hamilton, failing to make any inroads and sensing his best chance of ending a 22-month winning streak had faded, expressed his frustrations jili
“You have given me a hell of a gap to close,” he said jili

Norris had a nibble back at the Red Bull heading into the ensuing right hander, but he failed to make it stick jili
The question now was whether Norris, and indeed Hamilton – now less than five seconds off the lead – could make their tyres last jili
The answer arrived on lap 34 when Norris dived in for a fresh set of boots jili
Verstappen followed in on lap 35, and despite, a slow left-rear tyre change, retained his position ahead of Norris jili
Three laps later and Hamilton was in, changing to the faster medium compound jili
Hamilton had the bit jili between his teeth and within 10 laps he was crawling all over the back of Norris’ McLaren jili
Norris slung his McLaren to the inside on the entry to the first corner in a move to stop Hamilton, but the older Brit gained jili better traction out of the corner to slingshot by in his Mercedes jili
Verstappen was five seconds ahead and Hamilton started to reel his old nemesis in only to run out of laps jili
Sainz took fourth ahead of Sergio Perez with Leclerc sixth and George Russell seventh for Mercedes jili
